NHRC takes suo motu cognizance of Virudhunagar factory blast, issues notices

The National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu and the Superintendent of Police, Virudhunagar, over the reported death of 18 workers and injuries to six others in an explosion at a private firecracker manufacturing unit in the Kattanarpatti area of the Virudhunagar district, Tamil Nadu.

Taking suo motu cognisance of media reports, the Commission has sought a detailed report within two weeks. The Commission added that the report should include the status of health of the injured persons, the investigation into the case, and whether compensation, if any, has been paid to the next of kin of the deceased and the injured persons.

The blast was allegedly triggered due to friction during the chemical mixing and manufacturing process, and reportedly over 100 workers, including women, were present at the factory complex when the incident occurred on the 19th of this month.
