Newly appointed Madras High Court Chief Justice to take oath today

Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava is set to be sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court today, July 21, 2025.

The Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi is scheduled to administer the oath of office at a ceremony commencing at 4 p.m. in the Bharathiar Mandapam within the Raj Bhavan campus in Chennai.

This appointment follows the transfer of the previous Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, Justice K.R. Shriram, to the Rajasthan High Court, where he will now serve as Chief Justice. Justice Shrivastava, who was formerly the Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court, was officially notified of his transfer to Madras by the Union government on July 14, 2025, based on a recommendation by the Supreme Court collegium on May 26.

Born on March 6, 1964, in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, Justice Shrivastava began his legal career in 1987. He practiced in various courts, including the Raigarh district court, the Madhya Pradesh High Court, and the Chhattisgarh High Court, before being designated as a senior advocate in 2005.

He was elevated as a judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court in December 2009 and subsequently transferred to the Rajasthan High Court in October 2021, becoming its Chief Justice on February 6, 2024. He will serve as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court until his retirement on March 6, 2026.

The swearing-in ceremony is expected to be attended by several dignitaries, including Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, senior state ministers, judges of the High Court, and top bureaucrats.
