New low-pressure area forms over Bay of Bengal, to bring rains to Tamil Nadu

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the likely formation of a fresh low-pressure area over the southeast and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal today, October 24.

This new weather system is expected to track west-northwestwards and is predicted to become “more marked” (intensify) in the subsequent 24 hours.

The development signals a renewed period of rainfall activity for Tamil Nadu and the surrounding coastal regions over the coming week.

The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places over Tamil Nadu on October 24, and then again from October 26 to October 28. This indicates a second, potentially intense, spell of rain is on its way.

The earlier “Well-Marked Low-Pressure Area” which had prompted red and orange alerts across North Tamil Nadu and Chennai earlier this week, has weakened after moving inland over north interior Tamil Nadu and adjoining South Interior Karnataka.
