“Nesippaya” Movie Review
Director Vishnuvardhan marks his return to Tamil cinema after a decade with Nesippaya, a suspenseful drama blending a modern love story and an intriguing murder mystery set against the backdrop of scenic Portugal. Starring Akash Murali and Aditi Shankar, the film stands out with its relatable dialogues, gripping moments, and Kalki Koechlin’s stellar performance.
Known for introducing fresh talent and crafting compelling narratives, Vishnuvardhan’s directorial touch shines through in several well-executed scenes. Akash Murali delivers an earnest performance, evoking shades of his brother Atharva Murali, while also showcasing glimpses of his unique potential. Though he still has room to develop his emotional depth, Akash leaves a promising impression. Aditi Shankar, with her natural charm and girl-next-door appeal, brings authenticity to her character, especially in emotionally charged scenes where her frustration feels genuine and relatable.
The story follows a young man’s journey to rescue his ex-girlfriend, who is falsely accused of murder. The premise brims with potential, what could have been a tight thriller into a longer, drawn-out drama. Despite this, Vishnuvardhan’s ability to weave visually stunning sequences—showcasing Portugal’s picturesque streets, thrilling bike chases, and a tense women’s prison setting—keeps the audience engaged.
Kalki Koechlin is a revelation, delivering a memorable performance that elevates several key moments. Her striking screen presence and powerful dialogues make her the highlight of the film. Sarathkumar and Khushboo’s brief but impactful cameos add a layer of depth to the storyline. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music is another significant strength, with soul-stirring compositions that enhance the emotional resonance of the film.
Though Nesippaya a commendable effort from Vishnuvardhan. With sharper pacing and tighter storytelling, it could have achieved even greater impact. Nevertheless, Nesippaya is an engaging watch, offering moments of brilliance, solid performances, and a fresh cinematic experience.
The film, which marks the debut of late actor Murali’s son Akash Murali, features Aditi Shankar and Kalki Koechlin in prominent roles. With music composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja and cinematography by Cameron Eric Bryson, the movie promises a compelling cinematic experience.
