“Narivetta” Movie Review

Narivetta : A Courageous and Visually Compelling Journey

Anuraj Manohar’s Narivetta stands out as a bold and thought-provoking film that brings attention to sensitive political and social issues. Inspired by the real-life Muthanga incident of 2003, where Adivasi protestors faced police violence, the film seeks to raise awareness and spark conversations around systemic injustice.

The narrative centers on Varghese Peter, a CRPF officer portrayed with emotional intensity by Tovino Thomas. Sent to oversee a tribal protest, Varghese finds himself entangled in a morally complex situation that challenges his beliefs. As the story unfolds through a non-linear structure, viewers are invited to engage deeply with the ethical dilemmas and emotional undercurrents of the conflict.

Arya Salim delivers a striking performance as a tribal leader reminiscent of CK Janu. Her portrayal brings strength and authenticity to the screen, offering a powerful counterpoint to Varghese’s journey. While some character arcs could have been better developed, the ensemble cast adds depth to the narrative.

Cheran, the seasoned Tamil actor-director, portrays a senior police officer with understated authority. Without needing a menacing demeanor, his composed presence alone creates a sense of unease, holding a quiet tension that speaks volumes.

Technically, Narivetta is impressive. Vijay’s cinematography paints hauntingly beautiful frames that underscore the tension and emotion of the story. Jakes Bejoy’s evocative score complements the visuals, enhancing the film’s overall impact.

While the script occasionally loses focus and Varghese’s realization arrives a bit late, the film’s core message remains intact and relevant. It bravely addresses themes of power, exploitation, and resistance, shedding light on the struggles faced by marginalized communities.

In the end, Narivetta may not be flawless, but its courage and sincerity make it a meaningful cinematic effort. It is encouraging to see Indian cinema embrace such narratives, pushing boundaries and encouraging reflection. Narivetta is worth watching for its strong performances, striking visuals, and unwavering commitment to telling an important story with heart and integrity.
