Nandhan Movie Review

Nandhan is a film that explores important themes of caste oppression and power dynamics in rural Tamil Nadu. The story revolves around Ambedkumar (M Sasikumar), a humble laborer, and his relationship with the village head, Kopulingam (Balaji Sakthivel). When the Panchayat President’s seat becomes reserved for someone from an oppressed caste, Kopulingam sees an opportunity to maintain control by nominating Ambedkumar, whom he considers his loyal puppet. What follows is a tale of power, loyalty, and the gradual awakening of Ambedkumar.

The film is set in a small village where a single caste has historically held power. Despite this, the concept of elections is alien to the people, who see the unchallenged rule of their caste as a source of pride. This background sets the stage for a social and political shift when caste-based reservation comes into play, challenging the status quo.

M Sasikumar gives a sincere performance as Ambedkumar, a character torn between his loyalty to Kopulingam and the call for justice from his own community. Though he follows orders for most of the film, his eventual stand symbolizes the need for change. While his character arc is a key component of the story, the transformation feels somewhat abrupt, leaving audiences wanting more insight into his emotional journey.

The film has some strong moments, particularly in its portrayal of village politics and caste discrimination. The scenes where Kopulingam and his followers discuss who should take over as Panchayat President are amusing, lighthearted, and offer some of the film’s more enjoyable moments. However, the film misses the opportunity to fully explore the complexities of the caste divide, often skimming over the deeper emotions that such an intense subject matter brings with it.

Nandhan has its fair share of intense moments, with scenes depicting violence that aim to shock. However, these moments sometimes feel more like a tool for audience reaction rather than a reflection of the characters’ real struggles.

Overall, Nandhan is a film with a noble message and some thought-provoking moments. Despite some underdeveloped characters and missed opportunities for emotional depth, it presents important societal issues with a blend of humor and seriousness. It’s a film that reminds us of the importance of standing up for justice, even in the face of long-standing oppression.
