Modi starts Indonesia visit, focuses on Act East policy and Indo-Pacific cooperation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Indonesia on Monday, marking the beginning of a three-nation tour aimed at expanding India’s engagement in the Indo-Pacific region and reinforcing its Act East Policy and MAHASAGAR vision. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto welcomed Modi upon his arrival.
Before departing from New Delhi, the Prime Minister said the visits to Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand are intended to deepen India’s partnerships across the region while advancing its commitment to a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific. He described MAHASAGAR—Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across the Regions—as India’s broader vision for regional security, cooperation and sustainable growth.
Highlighting bilateral ties with Indonesia, Modi recalled that both countries elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during his 2018 visit. He noted that this is his first bilateral visit to Indonesia since that milestone and follows President Prabowo’s participation as the chief guest at India’s Republic Day celebrations in January 2025.
Modi said India and Indonesia enjoy long-standing cultural links and strong people-to-people connections, adding that the visit is expected to enhance cooperation across multiple sectors. During his stay, he will meet members of the Indian community and travel with President Prabowo to the Prambanan Temple complex in Yogyakarta, one of Indonesia’s most prominent Hindu heritage sites and a symbol of the historical ties between the two nations.
