Modi calls for united global action against terrorism at SCO summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation to adopt a unified approach against terrorism and reject what he described as double standards in tackling terror networks.
Speaking at the SCO summit in the presence of Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other leaders, Modi called for the dismantling of the wider ecosystem that enables terrorism, including funding, recruitment, radicalisation and safe havens.
Modi said terrorism should not be addressed merely through an action-and-reaction approach and argued that countries must respond collectively to the threat.
He also called for a clear message to nations that use terrorism as a policy instrument or provide shelter and support to militant groups, saying terrorism should never be regarded as a strategic advantage.
Although Pakistan was not directly named, the remarks were widely interpreted as a reference to Islamabad and its alleged support for militant organisations targeting India.
The prime minister also highlighted the continuing conflict in West Asia and its wider impact on global stability. He said conflicts in one part of the world can disrupt energy supplies, maritime trade and international supply chains, with developing countries often facing the greatest consequences.
Reiterating India’s longstanding position, Modi said disputes and conflicts should be settled through dialogue and diplomacy rather than military confrontation.
He also emphasised the importance of stability in Afghanistan for peace across Eurasia and said India would continue providing development and humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people.
