Modi asks teachers to help children cut screen time and stay away from drugs
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the recipients of the National Teachers’ Awards 2026 at his official residence in New Delhi ahead of Teachers’ Day.
During the interaction, award-winning teachers discussed their classroom experiences, innovative teaching techniques and ways of helping students discover their talents and interests.
One of the key issues raised by Modi was the growing amount of time children spend on screens. He described excessive screen use as a concern and encouraged teachers and schools to help students gradually reduce their dependence on digital devices.
The Prime Minister suggested that spending less time on screens could encourage children to take greater interest in outdoor activities and sports.
He also highlighted the importance of creativity, urging schools to organise activities that allow children to explore their interests beyond conventional academics.
Another major concern discussed was drug use among young people. Modi called on teachers to create greater awareness about drugs in educational institutions and to remain alert to changes in students’ behaviour.
He encouraged teachers to look beyond textbooks and syllabuses and develop a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by children.
According to Modi, teachers have an important role in protecting children’s curiosity, creativity and sense of childhood while guiding them towards healthier choices.
