Marco Rubio’s India Visit: Can talks with Jaishankar ease US-India trade and visa tensions?
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to India comes at a sensitive time for bilateral relations, with disagreements over visa restrictions and tariff threats adding to tensions between New Delhi and Washington.
Rubio is scheduled to meet External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in Mumbai on Tuesday afternoon. The meeting is being viewed as an opportunity for both countries to address their differences and work towards stabilising ties.
Indian officials have indicated that discussions are likely to cover energy, trade and investment, defence, and critical and emerging technologies. The talks are also expected to help prepare the ground for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s anticipated visit to the United States for the G20 leaders’ summit in December.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Rubio is expected to arrive in Mumbai at around 2.15 pm on Tuesday, with his meeting with Jaishankar scheduled for approximately 4 pm.
During his visit, the US Secretary of State will pay tribute to the victims of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks at the memorial at the Taj Palace hotel. He is also scheduled to attend the US @250 event.
The visit to Mumbai has drawn additional attention amid a debate over market access and competition in India’s telecommunications sector. Elon Musk, the US billionaire and a prominent figure associated with President Donald Trump’s administration, had alleged that the rollout of his satellite communications company, Starlink, was being delayed in India because of powerful business interests seeking to protect their market positions.
In a post on X, Musk questioned whether industrialist Mukesh Ambani was the real power behind India’s decisions, alleging that certain oligarchs were trying to maintain a monopolistic hold on the market.
Against this backdrop, Rubio’s discussions with Indian officials are expected to be closely watched for signs of progress on trade, investment and broader strategic cooperation.
