Maharashtra election result: BJP’s big breakthrough in Mumbai
Continuing its impressive show in Maharashtra, the Mahayuti, comprising the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), registered a big victory in the 29 municipal corporations in the state for which the polling was held on Thursday (January 15).
The biggest win the Mahayuti registered was in Mumbai, where it ended the Thackerays dominance.
According to the latest data provided by the State Election Commission (SEC), the BJP won 1,372 seats, followed by Shiv Sena (394). The Congress was at the third position, with 315 seats.
The BSP won six, NCP 158, MNS 12, Shiv Sena (UBT) 149, NCP (SP) 36, and other 342 seats.
Earlier, State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare had said that the turnout in the 29 civic bodies was in the 46-50 per cent range. In the 2017 elections, the polling percentage in Mumbai was 55.53, while the average voting figure in 26 corporations – elections were held for the first time in Jalna and Ichalkaranji municipal corporations – was 56.35 per cent.
The municipal corporations that went to polls on January 15 include Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Ulhasnagar, Kalyan-Dombivli, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar, Panvel, Nashik, Malegaon, Ahilyanagar, Jalgaon, Dhule, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Solapur, Kolhapur, Ichalkaranji, Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Nanded-Waghala, Parbhani, Jalna, Latur, Amravati, Akola, Nagpur and Chandrapur.
