Madurai AIIMS work to be completed by February 2027: RTI

An RTI reply received by a Tenkasi-based activist has revealed that the ongoing construction work of All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Madurai will be completed only by February 2027, nearly eight years after PM Narendra Modi laid its foundation stone.

It also says that out of the estimated project cost of Rs 2021.51 crore, a construction contract was awarded to Larsen & Toubro Ltd for Rs 1,118.35 crore.

At present, phase I work on academic block, nursing college, UG hostel, PG hostel, nursing student hostel, dining hall, OPD, ID block, and service zones 1, 2, and 3, are in progress, said the reply received by R Pandiaraja.

The total area of the buildings to be constructed is 2,18,927 sq m.

“Work on the buildings should be taken up parallelly. Out of the total estimated cost, L&T was given work contract for only about half the amount. It should be ensured that there are no delays in the disbursal of funds through JICA loan or from the Union govt side,” said Pandiaraja.

The construction commenced in May with a deadline of 33 months.

Madurai AIIMS executive director Dr M Hanumantha Rao had earlier assured that once phase I of work is completed by next year, students studying on the temporary campus in Ramanathapuram govt medical college hospital will be shifted there.
