Madurai AIIMS to start functioning from January 2026
The long-awaited All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Madurai is poised to begin its academic operations, with its medical college expected to start functioning from the new campus in Thoppur by the Pongal festival in January 2026.
This significant announcement comes as construction for the first phase progresses rapidly.
Dr. M. Hanumantha Rao, Executive Director of AIIMS Madurai, confirmed the target date, stating that the initial phase, which includes the medical college, student hostels, laboratories, and a 150-bedded hospital block for admissions and treatment, is on track for completion by January next year. Students currently undertaking their studies from the temporary campus in Ramanathapuram are anticipated to transition to the state-of-the-art Thoppur facility.
The overall project, with an estimated cost of ₹2021.51 crore, is being executed in two phases. While the medical college and initial hospital facilities are slated for the early 2026 opening, the entire AIIMS hospital, a comprehensive 900-bedded facility, is targeted for full operational status by 2027. This second phase will encompass expanded infrastructure, including a dedicated 150-bed infectious disease block, and enhanced clinical services.
Virudhunagar MP B. Manickam Tagore recently inspected the ongoing construction, urging the AIIMS administration to maintain swift progress and provide regular updates. He highlighted that approximately 1,200 workers are currently engaged in the construction, with L&T providing monthly progress reports.
