Madras High allows RSS route march in Tamil Nadu
The Madras High Court has directed Tamil Nadu police to consider applications for Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) route marches without rejecting them solely on grounds such as the presence of religious places, traffic congestion or opposition from other organisations.
The matter was taken up by Justice V Lakshminarayanan after VG Jagadeesan, RSS North Tamil Nadu state secretary, approached the court seeking permission for route marches followed by public meetings at various locations across the state.
Jagadeesan had sought directions to police authorities after an October 3 representation to the Director General of Police did not yield the expected response. The proposed marches were scheduled for October 18, October 25 and November 1, 2026.
During Friday’s hearing, Advocate General Vijay Narayan informed the court that applications for the October 25 and November 1 events would be considered, with any necessary changes based on local circumstances.
The state government assured the court that the police would take a decision by October 19 after reviewing the organisers’ representations and supporting details. Taking note of the assurance, the court closed the petition and cautioned against unnecessary delays in processing applications.
The court also advised RSS organisers to apply well ahead of planned events, noting that the Vijayadashami period was known in advance.
