“Lenin Pandiyan” Movie Review

A Sincere Rural Drama with Strong Writing and Social Purpose

Lenin Pandiyan is a sincere and socially conscious drama that brings together an elderly farmer and a young police constable in a courageous battle against an influential sand mafia and a system that often struggles to protect the very people it is meant to serve.

Directed by DD Balachandran, the film explores how power can be misused and how ordinary individuals find the courage to stand up against injustice. At its heart are two engaging protagonists—Durairasu (Gangai Amaren), a farmer, and Maravarman Sundarapandian (Dhaarshan Ganesan), a police constable. Both are portrayed as simple, idealistic men who draw strength from their strong-willed partners, Sandhanam (Roja) and Priya (Shrrita Rao).

The story gains momentum when Durairasu’s goat, Meenatchi, is hit by a lorry belonging to Ravi (Yugendran), a powerful figure involved in illegal sand mining. Matters become more serious when Durairasu becomes a witness in the murder of Podhum Ponnu (Archana Ravichandran), a VAO who had been exposing the illegal activities. With the court ordering police protection for Durairasu, Maravarman finds himself caught between his duty and a system determined to protect its own interests.

One of the film’s biggest strengths is its writing. The dialogues are sharp, occasionally humorous and often socially relevant. The film also contains several memorable sequences, particularly those involving George Maryan as Judge Beemarao. His performance is one of the highlights, bringing dignity, warmth and conviction to a character who represents empathy and justice.

The pre-interval sequence is another standout moment, gaining considerable impact from Ilaiyaraaja’s energetic score. The slice-of-life humour surrounding Gangai Amaren’s character also adds charm and keeps the narrative grounded.

As a debut feature, Lenin Pandiyan deserves appreciation for its ambition, strong central conflict and meaningful themes. While certain portions could have benefited from more refinement—particularly the romantic tracks and some developments in the final act—the film’s sincerity and social intent remain evident throughout.

The combination of rural realism, humour, emotion, strong supporting performances and a thought-provoking conflict makes Lenin Pandiyan a promising and commendable effort. More than anything, the film succeeds in placing ordinary people at the centre of a larger battle for justice, giving it an earnest and distinctive voice.
