Land acquistion process for Parandur airport takes off officially
The land acquisition process for the Parandur airport project has officially begun. The Tamil Nadu government issued a Government Order directing the initiation of the land acquisition.
The government has approved compensation rates for the acquired land, ranging from Rs 35 lakh to Rs 2.57 crore per acre, depending on the guideline value, sale value, and private negotiations. This is an effort to expedite the process and offer higher compensation to landowners.
The project requires approximately 3,331.25 acres of land, encompassing 13 villages in Sriperumbudur and Kancheepuram taluks.
A significant portion of this is private (patta) land, with some government-owned land and water bodies also included.
Despite the compensation offers, protests from local residents, particularly in Ekanapuram village, continue. Villagers are demanding higher compensation and express concerns about displacement, livelihood loss, and environmental impact.
The Parandur airport project is estimated to cost around Rs 20,000 crore. The first phase is targeted for completion by 2028, aiming to handle 20 million passengers annually.
The Central government had granted “in-principle” approval for the project, subject to conditions including the state compensating the Airports Authority of India (AAI) if Parandur becomes operational before Chennai International Airport reaches an annual capacity of 35 million passengers.
