Karnataka asked to maintain 6,000 cusecs Cauvery water flow to Tamil Nadu
The Cauvery Water Management Authority has endorsed a recommendation asking Karnataka to maintain a flow of 6,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu for 15 days.
The decision was taken during the CWMA’s 57th meeting in Delhi, chaired by S K Haldar. Representatives from both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka attended the meeting.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee had recommended the same 6,000-cusecs release for the 15-day period. The latest decision follows an earlier CWMA order from August 25, when Karnataka was directed to ensure a flow of 9,000 cusecs for 15 days.
The meeting took place after the Supreme Court directed the Tamil Nadu government to present its concerns regarding Karnataka’s release of the state’s proportionate share of Cauvery water before the CWMA.
At an earlier meeting on August 24, the CWRC had asked Karnataka to release water from its reservoirs and maintain a 9,000-cusecs flow at the Biligundulu border point. Over 15 days, this was expected to provide Tamil Nadu with around 11.66 TMC of water.
The latest release is expected to support Kuruvai cultivation and help meet drinking-water needs in Tamil Nadu.
Previously, Karnataka had also been directed to release 12,000 cusecs daily for 15 days beginning August 12, a decision subsequently supported by the CWMA.
