Kamal Haasan’s Gunaa is set for a worldwide re-release on June 21.

Originally directed by Santhana Bharathi, Gunaa premiered on Diwali in 1991. Produced by Swathi Chitra International and released globally by Rajkamal Films International, the film continues to captivate both longtime Kamal Haasan fans and younger audiences even after 33 years. Its dialogues and songs remain popular and are celebrated to this day.

Earlier this year, the Malayalam film Manjummel Boys gained significant success in Tamil Nadu, grossing over Rs 200 crore at the box office. The film’s inclusion of dialogues and songs from Gunaa played a key role in this achievement. Remarkably, when Gunaa first premiered, its dialogues and songs didn’t receive much acclaim in theaters. Director Santhana Bharathi noted that today’s generation embraced these elements with enthusiasm in Manjummel Boys.

Gunaa, featuring music by Ilayaraja, dialogues by Balakumaran, and cinematography by Venu, stars Kamal Haasan, Roshini, Rekha, Janakaraj, Ajay Rathnam, S. Varalakshmi, Girish Karnad, S. P. Balasubramaniam, and Sarath Saxena. The soundtrack includes songs written by Vaali and performed by Kamal Haasan, S. Janaki, Ilayaraja, and Yesudas. The film won the third Tamil Nadu Government Award for Best Film in Direct Tamil Films released in 1991.

Gunaa, a milestone in Kamal Haasan’s career and Tamil cinema history, has been remastered in digital format. Fulfilling a long-standing wish of Kamal Haasan’s fans, the re-release is facilitated by Pyramid Audio Group, a leader in Tamil film audio for over fifty years.
