Kamal Haasan to enter Rajya Sabha, DMK names three candidates

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party today announced the names of candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu.

One seat has been allocated to the Makkal Needhi Maiam party of actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan as per the earlier agreement, which will help him contest the elections.

DMK’s candidates include party leader SR Sivalingam, senior advocate and sitting MP P Wilson, and renowned Tamil writer Salma.

The announcement is followed by the seat-sharing agreement between the DMK and MNM, under which DMK allocated one of its four Rajya Sabha seats to include Haasan.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) had earlier announced that the biennial polls on the six vacant assembly seats will be conducted on June 19, 2025.

The vacancies arise on six seats where the current members – Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, M. Shanmugam, N. Chandrasegharan, M. Mohamed Abdulla, P. Wilson, and Vaiko – are going to have their tenures end on July 25, as per the ECI.
