Justice Arumughaswamy Commission submits 600-page final report
Justice Arumughaswamy Commission’s 600-page final report on late chief minister J Jayalalithaa’s death was submitted today to Chief Minister MK Stalin.
Justice Arumughaswamy, who came to the Chief Secretariat with the final report, handed over the report to him.
On September 22, 2016, Jayalalithaa, the late chief minister at the time, experienced serious health issues. She was subsequently admitted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai’s Thousand Lights area. Following 75 days of treatment, Jayalalithaa passed away on December 5 of the same year.
The circumstances surrounding Jayalalithaa’s death and the treatments she received while in the hospital exploded into full-scale politics after her death in December 2016.
O. Panneerselvam, who thought that Jayalalithaa’s death was mysterious, organised a charity demonstration and demanded the formation of a commission of investigation. Following this, on September 25, 2017, the then-chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami appointed a commission of investigation under the direction of retired High Court judge Arumughaswamy.
The Commission began its inquiry in November 2017 and held numerous hearings with Jayalalithaa’s close associates, the medical professionals who treated her, the then-Tamil Nadu Health Minister Vijayabaskar, the then-Health Secretary Radhakrishnan, the then-Tamil Nadu Finance Minister, and senior AIADMK leader O Pannerselvam.
Over 157 witnesses related to Jayalalithaa have appeared before the Arumughaswamy Commission and put forward their points of view.
