Indian Coast Guard rescue fisherman from drowning fishing boat off Kerala coast

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on Tuesday conducted a medical evacuation of a Tamil Nadu fisherman, Ajin, who was drowning from a fishing boat off the Kerala coast.

The 26-year-old fisherman, hailing from Tamil Nadu’s Kolachal, was rescued from IFB Jazeera 40 nautical miles off Beypore, the Coast Guard said in a statement.

The Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) in Beypore received a medical distress call from AD Fisheries, reporting the fisherman’s drowning from the fishing boat.

“Although the fisherman was rescued by the IFB, the health condition of the patient was deteriorating due to ingress of seawater in his lungs. Considering the gravity of the situation, ICG immediately launched an Advanced Light Helicopter with a medical team embarked at 1500 hrs (3 pm IST) from Kochi whilst Coast Guard ships Aryaman and C-404 had also responded to the distress,” the statement mentioned.

“The IFB was located, and the patient was airlifted to Kochi. On arrival, the patient was immediately shifted to nearby hospital,” the statement added.

Currently, the condition of the patient is stable.
