India issues fresh warning over recruitment into Russian military
The Ministry of External Affairs has once again advised Indian nationals against joining the Russian armed forces, warning that people continue to be recruited through agents and other non-public organisations offering overseas employment.
The ministry said some Indians had been attracted by the promise of substantial financial benefits but later sought government assistance to secure their release.
The government reiterated that it has repeatedly warned about the serious risks associated with joining the Russian military. It also cautioned people against trusting unverified individuals who offer employment opportunities abroad.
According to the MEA, some individuals had knowingly pursued opportunities to join the Russian armed forces while believing that the Indian government could later intervene to secure their return.
The advisory also referred to cases in which Indians had voluntarily surrendered their Indian citizenship, obtained Russian passports and subsequently joined the Russian military.
The government warned that decisions driven by short-term financial incentives could expose individuals to grave danger.
The MEA further said that foreign nationals were reportedly being recruited into the Russian armed forces through non-government entities, including voluntary organisations.
Indian citizens have therefore been urged to conduct thorough checks before accepting overseas employment offers, particularly when the recruitment agency is not registered with the MEA.
The advisory comes as India continues diplomatic efforts with Russia regarding Indians serving in its armed forces.
The government said it remains engaged with Russian authorities to secure the safety, welfare and early release of Indian nationals serving there.
