India halts Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan
In a significant move, India has decided to halt the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan. This decision comes after a deadly attack in Kashmir, for which India holds Pakistan responsible.
The attack, which occurred in the popular tourist area of Pahalgam, saw a group of militants open fire on visitors, resulting in the death of at least 26 people, mostly tourists, and injuring many more.
The Indus Waters Treaty, signed in 1960, has been a way for both countries to share the water from the Indus River and its connected rivers. Despite wars and other conflicts, the treaty has remained in place for many years.
However, following the recent violence, India stated that the treaty will be put on hold. Officials said this will continue until Pakistan takes strong action against groups that carry out attacks in India.
This move is likely to cause concerns in Pakistan, as the Indus River system is very important for their farming and water supply. Experts believe this could create new challenges for the relationship between the two countries.
