Heavy winds and rain disrupt Chennai flight operations; rains likely to continue across Tamil Nadu

Adverse weather conditions, including strong winds and a sudden spell of rain, disrupted flight operations at Chennai International Airport on Thursday, forcing the diversion of flights and causing delays to several arrivals and departures.

The weather-related disruptions also affected flights scheduled to arrive in Chennai. Services from Indore, Lucknow and Hyderabad were required to remain airborne for extended periods before receiving clearance to land, resulting in delays. Departing flights bound for Ranchi, Mysuru, Goa and Kolkata were also affected, with some services running up to two hours behind schedule.

Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a forecast warning of heavy rainfall in several parts of Tamil Nadu over the next two days. Districts in the western and central regions of the state are expected to receive significant rainfall on Thursday and Friday.

According to the forecast, heavy showers are likely in the Nilgiris, Dindigul, Theni, Madurai, Sivaganga, Tiruchy and Perambalur districts. Officials have urged residents, particularly those living in low-lying and flood-prone areas, to remain cautious and monitor weather advisories.

The weather department has also predicted widespread rainfall activity across multiple districts on Friday. Moderate to heavy rain is expected in Madurai, Erode, Namakkal, Karur, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni, Dindigul, Tiruchy, Pudukkottai, Sivaganga, Ariyalur and Perambalur. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as changing weather patterns continue to impact both air travel and daily life in several parts of the state.
