Heavy Rainfall Expected in Chennai and Coastal Tamil Nadu; IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Next 48 Hours

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for Chennai and coastal Tamil Nadu, forecasting heavy rainfall over the next 24 to 48 hours. The weather warning comes as the region braces for intense weather conditions, with heavy downpours expected to continue throughout the weekend.

According to the IMD, the rainfall is attributed to the influence of a low-pressure area that is likely to develop in the Bay of Bengal. The weather system is expected to intensify, bringing moderate to heavy rains across Tamil Nadu, with Chennai being particularly vulnerable to short spells of intense rainfall. The southern districts, including Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, and Ramanathapuram, are also expected to experience similar conditions.

The Yellow Alert indicates the possibility of severe weather conditions, urging local authorities to remain vigilant. Citizens have been advised to stay updated with weather reports and take necessary precautions to avoid disruptions.

Chennai, which has already witnessed scattered rainfall in the past week, may experience localized flooding, especially in low-lying areas. The IMD has also warned of strong winds, which could affect coastal areas, with speeds reaching up to 40-50 km/h.

The IMD forecasts that the rainfall will gradually subside by November 9, but the region will continue to experience overcast skies and occasional showers. Local government authorities are on high alert, monitoring the situation and readying emergency response teams to mitigate the impact of possible flooding or waterlogging in the city.

As the city prepares for the rainfall, residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and to take precautionary measures to stay safe. The IMD will continue to monitor the system and issue further updates as the situation develops.
