Heatwave to prevail in 16 states including TN for next four days, says IMD

The searing heat wave sweeping large parts of east India continued unabated and spread to southern parts of the country on Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Maximum temperatures settled two to seven degrees Celsius above normal in parts of Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

The mercury soared to 43.5 degrees Celsius in Anantapur and 43.2 degrees Celsius in Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh, and 42.3 degrees Celsius in Salem and 42 degrees Celsius in Erode in Tamil Nadu.

The ongoing spell of heat wave is the second this month.

Heatwave conditions have been prevailing in Odisha since April 15 and the Gangetic West Bengal since April 17, according to the MeT department.

In a statement, the IMD said heat wave to severe heat wave conditions are expected in east India and south peninsular India during the next five days.

Maximum temperatures are predicted to rise by 2-4 degrees Celsius in northwest and east India and 3-4 degrees Celsius in Maharashtra during the next 4-5 days.
