“Granny” Movie Review

Granny is a Tamil horror thriller that blends mystery, atmosphere, and emotion to deliver a chilling cinematic experience. Set in a remote village, the film begins with a mysterious death that gradually opens the door to a deeply buried dark secret. Running parallel to this is the story of a young techie couple who return to their ancestral home, unaware that the house is guarded by an eerie presence. Their lives change when they encounter an unsettling old woman, Occhai, played brilliantly by veteran actress Vadivukkarasi, whose past hides a terrifying truth.

The film’s greatest strength lies in its engaging and fear-inducing narrative. The screenplay slowly builds tension, allowing the suspense to seep in naturally rather than relying on loud jump scares. Occhai’s character is written with depth and menace, and her presence alone is enough to create a sense of unease. The real-time location of the ancestral house adds authenticity, while the lighting and set design create stupefying visuals that heighten the horror mood.

Vadivukkarasi delivers a standout performance, effortlessly commanding the screen with her expressions and body language. The prosthetics and makeup team deserve special appreciation for transforming her into a genuinely frightening figure. The supporting cast, including Ananth Nag, Dhileepan, and Singampuli, contribute effectively, offering balanced performances that support the central narrative.

While the pacing feels slightly slow in certain portions and the camera occasionally lingers longer than necessary, these minor drawbacks do not overshadow the film’s strengths. Overall, Granny (also known as Occhai) succeeds in keeping the audience engaged with its strong performances, intriguing plot, and immersive horror atmosphere. For fans of Tamil horror cinema, this film is a satisfying and worthwhile watch.
