Gem Granites Veeramani produced in court, remanded in fresh POCSO case
Gem Granites owner Gem R Veeramani has been remanded in judicial custody for 14 days following his arrest in connection with a fresh complaint alleging the sexual abuse of a minor girl in Madurai.
Veeramani, 84, was produced before the Chennai Special POCSO Court on Wednesday after being arrested by Madurai police and brought to Chennai. Special Court Judge S Padma ordered that he remain in custody until October 21.
The latest case stems from a complaint filed by a minor girl alleging sexual abuse by Veeramani.
The arrest comes amid a wider investigation into allegations against the businessman and several others. Veeramani was previously arrested on August 29 along with Shanthi, her husband Mahendra Simhan and Ganesan in connection with cases involving alleged sexual abuse of minor girls.
A Special Investigation Team consisting of women police officers has been formed to investigate the allegations. Police have said the probe has expanded as additional complaints have emerged, with five POCSO cases now registered against Veeramani.
The court had earlier rejected bail applications submitted by Shanthi and Mahendra Simhan in connection with the case.
