Free power, drug free society, white paper of DMK govt’s finances: CM Vijay’s first moves

Newly sworn-in Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Sunday outlines his first set of key decisions after taking oath in Tamil Nadu, marking the beginning of his government’s policy direction.

The measures include 200 units of free electricity for households, the formation of a special anti-drug task force, and a dedicated force for women’s protection. These decisions are among the first orders signed by the new Chief Minister after assuming office.

Free electricity, action against drugs and women safety form the core of his initial governance push. In his first address, Vijay begins his speech with the Tamil phrase “En Nenjil Kudiyirukkum”, meaning “who lives in my heart”, a line he has often used while addressing his supporters.

Introducing himself as a “common man”, the actor-turned-politician highlights his non-dynastic background, saying it is one of the reasons he has been accepted by the people. He assures that his government will focus on “real, secular, social justice” and asks the public to give him time to deliver results.

“There will be no power centre other than me. I will be the only centre of power,” he says, stressing accountability in governance. Vijay also promises transparency, indicating that his government may release a white paper on the state’s finances.

He thanks supporters for standing by him through challenges and says, “You have given me a huge responsibility. But my request to you is to give me some time.”

Referring to his political journey, he adds, “There were many problems and many insults that I faced,” and credits party workers and supporters for standing with him. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulates Vijay and assures the Centre’s cooperation with the new state government.

The new Chief Minister, who declared assets worth Rs 624 crore in his election affidavit, signals that his administration will focus on accountability, welfare, and administrative transparency in the coming days.
