Education reform protests gather momentum in Delhi
Large crowds of students, parents, activists, and political supporters assembled in New Delhi to demand reforms in India’s examination and education system following a call by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a satirical citizens’ movement that emerged earlier this year.
The demonstrations focus on concerns over examination irregularities and paper leaks, with protesters seeking greater accountability from the Union Education Ministry.
The protest gained additional attention after education activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on a prolonged hunger strike supporting the movement, was taken to hospital. He has continued his fast while receiving medical care.
Although Delhi Police stated that permission had not been granted for a march towards Parliament, organisers indicated that they intended to proceed.
Security has been tightened around central Delhi, with extensive police deployment, road barricades, and traffic restrictions.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke addressed supporters at the protest site, describing the turnout as a significant milestone for the movement. Protesters have demanded action to address shortcomings in the examination system and greater accountability from policymakers.
Demonstrations supporting the campaign have also been reported in several other Indian cities.
