Don’t fall prey to fake job offers from SE Asian nations, TN warns
The Tamil Nadu government has cautioned state citizens not to get enticed and entrapped by taking up fraudulent and exploitative job offers from abroad, especially from southeast Asian countries like Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar and Laos.
Additionally, the state government has also warned it would take strict legal action against agents or agencies in Tamil Nadu, who are found to be involved in the illegal business of sending people abroad for work without being registered with the Union government.
The statement issued by the Non-Resident Tamils’ Welfare Department came in the wake of Tamilians being taken to various southeast Asian countries on a tourist visa under the pretext of Information Technology (IT) jobs, following which they were pressured to engage in illegal online activities.
The department claimed that those who refuse to work are subjected to torturous treatment such as electric shocks and physical abuse.
So far, over 80 Tamilians who fell prey to such fraudulent job offers have been rescued by the NRTWD from these countries.
In light of the developments so far, the Tamil Nadu government has advised people to exercise extreme caution and verify the antecedents of recruiting agents as well as any company before taking up any job offer abroad.
