“Dark” Movie Review

“Every shadow hides a secret.”

Psychological horror films are at their best when they create fear through atmosphere rather than jump scares, and Dark successfully follows that path. The story opens with a horrifying incident in which one of three young men living in a rented house murders his two roommates before ending his own life. The tragic event leaves the house abandoned, earning it the reputation of being haunted. Despite being fully aware of its disturbing past, Ajay Karthik chooses to move into the house because of its inexpensive rent. What begins as a practical decision soon turns into a terrifying nightmare as he starts experiencing unexplained supernatural occurrences. His confidence slowly gives way to fear, leading to shocking developments that culminate in a gripping investigation led by Police Officer Natti. As the mystery unfolds, unexpected twists keep the audience invested until the final moments.

Ajay Karthik delivers a commendable performance, convincingly portraying the emotional and psychological transformation of a fearless youngster into a man consumed by terror. His expressive eyes and restrained performance make the character’s fear feel authentic. Natti shines as the determined police officer, bringing depth and credibility to the investigation. Veteran actor Bhagyaraj, despite his brief appearance, leaves a memorable impact with his effortless screen presence. K, Anjana Nethran, VTV Ganesh, Indumathi Manikandan, and Sibi Chakravarthy provide dependable support, ensuring every character contributes meaningfully to the narrative.

Visually, Dark is one of the film’s strongest aspects. Cinematographer Ravi Shakti masterfully uses lighting and shadows to create an unsettling atmosphere where every corner of the house feels mysterious. Manu Ramesh’s haunting background score enhances the tension with subtle musical cues instead of overwhelming sound effects. Kathiresh Alakeshan’s sharp editing keeps the suspense intact, while art director Shanmugaraja transforms the eerie house into a silent yet powerful character that dominates the film’s mood.

Director Kalyan K. Jagan deserves appreciation for presenting a conventional ghost story with a psychological horror approach. Rather than depending entirely on supernatural visuals, he focuses on building fear through mood, suspense, and uncertainty. Although the screenplay has a few minor logical inconsistencies, its engaging narrative, effective performances, atmospheric visuals, and well-executed twists make Dark an entertaining horror thriller. Overall, the film offers a chilling cinematic experience that will satisfy fans looking for suspense, mystery, and psychological scares.
