CM Vijay seeks NEET exemption and safeguards for southern states

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and TVK leader Vijay has urged the Centre to grant the state an exemption from NEET and ensure that Tamil Nadu’s political representation is protected in any proposed delimitation exercise.

Speaking at the Southern Zonal Council meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Vijay argued that NEET places students from rural and economically weaker backgrounds at a disadvantage. He reportedly asked the Union government to permit Tamil Nadu to admit students to MBBS, BDS and AYUSH courses using Class 12 marks instead of NEET scores.

Tamil Nadu governments have opposed NEET for several years. Vijay has also previously called for education to be moved from the Concurrent List back to the State List.

At the same meeting, he highlighted the need for stronger coordination among southern states on issues including drug abuse, coastal security and the blue economy.
