Chennai Port to get a Rs 8000 crore boost in infra
The Chennai Port Authority (ChPA) is planning a significant development with an estimated cost of Rs 8,000 crore for an outer harbour project.
This project is a renewed effort, as the concept was initially proposed in 2007 and restructured in 2013, but did not materialize due to various reasons including economic recession and lack of adequate response to bids.
According to recent reports, Sunil Paliwal, the chairperson of the Chennai Port Authority, stated that a technological feasibility assessment for this Rs 8,000 crore outer harbour project will be conducted.
The plan includes reclaiming approximately 200 acres behind the container berth, which would have a 2 km length.
The initial proposal in 2007 aimed to develop a mega container terminal at North Bharathi Dock with a 2 km quay length and a capacity of 4 Million Twenty Foot Equivalent Units (MTEU) on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode, estimated at over Rs 3,000 crore.
The 2013 restructuring revised the cost to ₹5,100 crore for handling multipurpose cargoes. Now, the project is being re-evaluated with the significantly higher estimated cost of Rs 8,000 crore.
