Chennai Corporation scraps Rs 284 crore footpath tenders over irregularity concerns
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has reportedly cancelled all 35 tenders issued for a citywide footpath improvement project valued at Rs 284 crore after an internal review reportedly uncovered several irregularities.
According to reports, a scrutiny of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) revealed that the project’s overall cost appeared to have been overstated. The review also raised concerns that certain eligibility conditions in the tenders may have favoured a limited group of contractors.
Authorities further found that the estimated construction cost per metre of footpath was significantly higher than prevailing market rates, with the projected expenditure said to be nearly four times the normal cost.
The review also identified the inclusion of several components that were not considered essential to the project, potentially increasing the financial burden on the state exchequer.
Civic officials said these findings prompted concerns over the transparency and financial feasibility of the project. The corporation has now decided to revisit the DPR, conduct an inquiry into the alleged irregularities and make necessary corrections before inviting fresh tenders. Officials said the project will move forward only after the revised proposal receives the required approvals.
