Campaign ends for first phase TN civic polls

The campaign at local bodies which will undergo polling on October 6 is all set to end today evening. In view of this, last minute efforts are being made by leaders, candidates and their supporters to attract voters.

The State government has declared a public holiday in rural local bodies in 9 districts where ordinary elections are scheduled to be held on October 6 and 9. Ordinary elections are scheduled in Chengalpattu, Kallakurichi, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Tirupattur, Vellore and Villupuram districts.

Polling will take place from 7am to 6pm. Covid-19 patients and persons with symptoms would be allowed to vote from 5 pm to 6 pm. “We will appoint a micro observer and videograph the proceedings in sensitive booths,” said the State Election Commissioner V Palanikumar. He noted that 40,000 police personnel would also be roped in for election duty.

Chief Minister and DMK president has appealed to the voters to vote for the DMK-led Front in the rural local body elections in nine new districts of the state. Ordinary elections are scheduled in nine new districts of Chengalpattu,

Meanwhile, the opposition AIADMK party has urged the Tamil Nadu state election commission (TNSEC) to deploy booth-level officers (BLOs) to issue the booth slips/voter slips to the voters for the rural local body polls instead of panchayat secretaries.
