Anna University sexual assault issue: AIADMK, BJP stage protest, 1,500 arrested
A day after the sexual assault of a woman student on Anna University campus in Chennai came to light, AIADMK and BJP workers staged a protest demanding justice on Thursday.
Following the protest, both the party workers were detained by the police. Earlier, Student Federation of India, a wing of CPM, staged a protest in front of Anna University.
On the detention, BJP leader Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan said, “This is atrocious. They want to crush our voice.”
On Wednesday, the police arrested a 37-year-old biriyani seller in connection with the crime. The woman was a second year student of College of Engineering, Guindy and the crime took place on December 23. On that day, the student was reportedly talking to her male friend at a building on the college campus when a miscreant hit the friend and sexually assaulted her.
Based on the complaint from the survivour, Kotturpuram All Women’s Police Station registered a case and four special teams were formed to nab the accused.
The police told PTI: “During investigation, based on scientific evidence, Gnanasekaran of Kottur (a neighbourhood near the college) has been arrested for this crime. The suspect has given a confessional statement. He is doing business by running a biryani shop on the pavement.”
