Ajith lauds Vijay for motorsport city, calls it a major step for racing
Actor and motorsport enthusiast Ajith Kumar has welcomed the Tamil Nadu government’s proposal to establish a dedicated Motor Sports City, describing the initiative as a potentially important development for Indian racing.
Ajith praised the government’s broader efforts to encourage young people to participate in sports, identify promising athletes and provide them with structured opportunities to develop their skills.
He singled out the proposed motorsport facility, saying that the creation of dedicated infrastructure could help strengthen the racing ecosystem in the state. In a reference to Neil Armstrong’s famous words, Ajith described the government’s move as a small beginning that could have a much larger impact on Indian motorsport.
Ajith’s association with racing stretches back more than two decades. He competed in the Formula BMW Asia series before moving on to British Formula 3 and later took part in the FIA Formula 2 Championship in 2010.
More recently, he established Ajith Kumar Racing and competed in the Michelin 24H Dubai in 2025, with the team securing third place in its category. The actor has also expressed an interest in motorsport beyond driving, including involvement as a team owner.
Vijay announced the Motor Sports City proposal in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on September 3 as part of a wider plan to strengthen sports infrastructure across the state.
The proposed facility is expected to include an international-standard racing circuit, training infrastructure and other facilities designed to develop motorsport talent. The government also aims to create the capacity to host major national and international racing competitions, including Formula 1, Formula 2, Formula 3 and Formula 4 events.
