A.R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer’s Ramayana music unveiled at grand Chennai event
The music of the upcoming cinematic adaptation of the Ramayana took the spotlight at a major launch event in Chennai, bringing together composer A.R. Rahman, members of the cast and the creative team behind the ambitious production.
Held at the Chennai Trade Centre on Thursday, the event featured performances of songs and musical themes from the film, which is directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra. Rahman has composed the music in collaboration with celebrated composer Hans Zimmer.
The film features Ranbir Kapoor, Yash, Sai Pallavi, Rakul Preet Singh, Ravie Dubey and Sunny Deol, among others.
Organised by Amazon Music, the film’s official music streaming partner, the programme began with a children’s choir presenting a Tamil rendition of “Jai Jai Ram”. Producer Namit Malhotra and director Nitesh Tiwari spoke about adapting the epic for the big screen and discussed its cultural significance and enduring appeal.
Rahman later joined singer Chinmayi Sripaada to perform “Jai Jai Ram”, drawing attention to the project’s multilingual and musical ambitions.
Several cast members, including Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, Yash, Rakul Preet Singh and Ravie Dubey, shared their experiences of working on the film.
One of the evening’s key attractions was “Ravana Tandav”, which had been released on Dussehra. Yash, who portrays Ravana, spoke about how the song helped him connect with the character’s association with Lord Shiva and informed his approach to the role.
Rahman and his orchestra also presented musical themes and background scores created for the film. The programme featured “Mangal Rang” and “Jodi Jodi”, while singer Sachet Tandon performed “Main Ram” live for the first time.
The celebrations concluded with the cast, musicians and other members of the production team appearing together on stage.
Reflecting on the project, Rahman described it as an opportunity to create music that could become part of people’s lives. He also spoke about the collaborative process involving Malhotra, Tiwari, lyricist Kumar Vishwas and their wider team, calling his work with Zimmer a memorable experience.
The production seeks to bring a familiar epic to contemporary audiences through a large-scale cinematic presentation supported by an international musical collaboration.
