“4 Idiots” Movie Review

The 4 Idiots team has made a sincere effort, and the film just about manages to pass.

4 Idiots is a light-hearted comedy that brings together four friends whose unusual profession is stealing. True to the title, all four characters are somewhat foolish, leading to several amusing situations. Their lives take an unexpected turn when the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown disrupt their usual activities. Unable to continue their profession, they decide to carry out one final theft and settle down.

Their plan begins after they come across an audio leak involving a conversation about money. Believing they have found the perfect opportunity, the four enter an unoccupied bungalow to steal it. However, things quickly take an unexpected turn when they are caught by the security guard, played by Ravi Maria. From that point, everyone who enters the house becomes trapped in a strange and increasingly complicated situation. How they try to escape and what really happens inside the bungalow forms the central mystery of the film.

Pugazh takes the lead and delivers a surprisingly restrained performance. Instead of relying heavily on his usual energetic comic mannerisms, he keeps his performance subtle and controlled. This change in approach is refreshing and shows another side of the actor.

Kumki Ashwin, Indran Ilangovan and Thidiyan Thiruchelvam provide good support as his friends, creating several enjoyable comic moments. Ravi Maria stands out as the security guard, bringing his characteristic energy and cleverness to the role, while Vincent Asokan adds strength to the antagonist side.

The heroine’s character also gets an unexpected twist, giving her opportunities to contribute beyond the glamour seen in the promotional material. Though the character could have been developed with more depth, the effort to give her a meaningful role is appreciated.

With most of the story taking place inside a single house, cinematographer UK Senthilkumar has the challenging task of keeping the visuals engaging, and he handles the setting effectively. Subash Munirathinam’s music provides adequate support.

The film ultimately delivers a meaningful message, particularly towards the climax. While the pacing occasionally tests patience and not every comedy scene works equally well, there are enough entertaining moments to keep the film moving.

Overall, 4 Idiots is a simple attempt at delivering a full-fledged comedy with a positive message. It may not be perfect, but the performances, situational humour and unexpected twists make it a reasonably enjoyable watch.
