Cop with hope

Sethupathi Tamil Movie Review by Chennaivision

STORY:

Sethupathi (Vijay Sethupathi) is a honest police officer and he has a beautiful family (consisting wife Ramya Nambeesan, daughter and son). Like any other policeman, he too doesn’t get much time to spend with family.

The challenges before Sethupathi is that he has to take on not just the system  which is unfriendly and even corrupt, but also a local criminal- a kind of lord in Madurai- Vaathiyar (Vela Ramamoorthy).

But an accident involving a teenager shatters Sethupathi’s clean image, as he shoots a youngster. Now the inspector, who was in line to become the ASP, needs to redeem himself to achieve the mission, as he is challenged by the villain that ‘Kaakki Sattai Pottaa Mattum Dhaan Nee Aambala’.

ANALYSIS:

Sethupathi, Vijay Sethupathi’s first film as police officer, offers nothing new. It’s a tried and tested script. But still, the movie manages to hold our attention, and that’s the magic of khaki and VS’s performance.

Director SU Arun Kumar, after a soft Pannayarum Padminiyum, has tried his hands at an action entertainer, that too a police story. The movie is oft-beaten, and the story begins with a man in khaki being burnt alive and the protagonist bent on punishing the guilty.

But they way Arun has sketched the characters well enough deserve special mention, that just the personalities alone invoke interests among the audiences.

Vijay Sethupathi plays a cop for the first time in this film; a natural progression for any actor, and delivers solid performance from beginning till end. Ramya Nambeesan is hauntingly expressive. The two kids are vivacious while Vela Ramamurthy is menacing.

Nivas K Prasanna brings in variety with ease, Sreekar Prasad’s cuts are as smooth and sharp too. Dinesh Krishnan’s cinematography shows immense maturity.

Though Sethupathi has had predecessors with similar tales, it has its own moments. It is a film that moves from reel to reel on the shoulders of Vijay Sethupathi.
