Vijay Heads to UK on First Overseas Visit, Eyes Big-Ticket Investments for Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has begun his first overseas tour since taking office, travelling to the United Kingdom with a focus on bringing fresh investments and high-value employment opportunities to the State.

Vijay departed from Chennai airport at 10.05 p.m. on Thursday and travelled to London via Dubai. He is scheduled to arrive in London on September 11.

During his UK visit, the Chief Minister is expected to witness the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding with British companies. He will also meet business leaders, entrepreneurs and representatives from various industries.

Interestingly, Vijay chose Gate 2 at Chennai airport, which is generally used by regular passengers, instead of Gate 6, designated for VVIP movement.

According to a Tamil Nadu government release, the State is seeking to establish itself as one of Asia’s most attractive destinations for investment. The government said that within its first 100 days, it had secured MoUs involving investments of more than Rs. 1 lakh crore through the Tamil Nadu Investors’ Conference 2026.

European companies have also proposed projects worth around Rs. 8,491 crore, which are expected to create approximately 5,690 jobs.

The State government said the recently implemented India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement has created additional possibilities for Tamil Nadu. The agreement came into effect on July 15, 2026, and Tamil Nadu recorded exports from Chennai on the first day of its implementation.

Sectors such as textiles and apparel, leather and footwear, automobile components, engineering goods and electronics are expected to benefit significantly from improved access to the UK market.

Tamil Nadu already has a substantial British corporate presence across engineering, financial services and technology. Several UK companies operate manufacturing facilities and Global Capability Centres in the State.

Vijay’s visit is therefore expected to focus on expanding the operations of existing British companies while attracting fresh investments in advanced manufacturing, automobiles and EVs, electronics and GCCs. The government hopes these efforts will translate into more high-skilled employment opportunities for people in Tamil Nadu.
