Supreme Court asks Tamil Nadu to take Cauvery dispute to CWMA
The Supreme Court on Monday directed Tamil Nadu to raise its concerns over Karnataka’s alleged shortfall in releasing Cauvery water before the Cauvery Water Management Authority.
Tamil Nadu told the court that it was not receiving its proportionate share of water. The bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, however, noted that Karnataka had already complied with the directions issued by the CWMA.
The State’s counsel argued that the authority had not directed Karnataka to release the full quantity Tamil Nadu claimed was due to it.
The court advised Tamil Nadu to place the dispute before the CWMA and scheduled the matter for further hearing on August 31.
The case follows an earlier Supreme Court direction requiring Karnataka to comply with the CWMA’s instructions on releasing water to Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu had sought enforcement of a direction requiring Karnataka to release 3,500 cusecs of Cauvery water daily for 15 days. The State had calculated its requested quantity at 4.536 TMC and sought delivery within the stipulated period.
The Cauvery dispute remains a long-running source of tension between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, with both sides repeatedly approaching statutory authorities and the courts over water-sharing obligations.
