PM Modi’s visit: India and Slovakia upgrade relations, sign key agreements across multiple sectors

India and Slovakia have elevated their bilateral relationship to the level of a Comprehensive Partnership, marking a significant step in strengthening cooperation between the two countries.

During talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, both sides signed 11 agreements covering areas including labour mobility, digital innovation, defence collaboration, education, and emerging technologies.

The leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement at the earliest opportunity, viewing it as an important catalyst for expanding economic ties and trade opportunities.

Prime Minister Modi, on the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Slovakia, described the new partnership as a reflection of the two nations’ shared values, common priorities, and long-term aspirations. He noted that discussions focused on identifying new avenues to deepen bilateral engagement and broaden cooperation.

A key outcome of the meeting was the finalisation of a Letter of Intent on defence cooperation, which is expected to strengthen collaboration between the defence sectors and industries of both countries. Prime Minister Modi said the agreement demonstrates the high level of trust and strategic alignment between India and Slovakia.

Among the agreements signed was a Memorandum of Understanding on labour migration, aimed at facilitating the legal and orderly movement of skilled professionals. Both nations also agreed to work towards concluding a Social Security Agreement to enhance welfare and social protection for workers moving between the two countries.

The two leaders further explored opportunities for greater cooperation in the energy sector, with a focus on improving energy security and sustainability. Areas identified for collaboration include nuclear power, geothermal energy, and diversification of energy resources.

Prime Minister Modi expressed appreciation for Slovakia’s support in efforts related to the India-EU trade negotiations. Prime Minister Fico welcomed the proposed India-EU Free Trade Agreement, describing it as one of the most significant and ambitious trade arrangements under discussion.

Acknowledging the growing strategic importance of the Indo-Pacific region, the leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation in areas such as regional connectivity, open and rules-based trade, maritime freedom, technological advancement, and the peaceful settlement of disputes. A joint statement highlighted the shared commitment of both countries to promoting stability, economic growth, and mutually beneficial partnerships.
