PM Modi speaks to injured pilot after Flydubai cockpit attack
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke by telephone with Captain Smit Machchhar on Friday and praised the pilot for his actions during an alleged attempt to crash an Israel-bound Flydubai flight.
Machchhar was seriously injured after reportedly being stabbed by his co-pilot inside the cockpit of the flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday.
The aircraft was carrying 174 people, including 27 children. Despite his injuries, Machchhar is reported to have acted quickly to deal with the situation and prevent further danger to those on board.
Speaking to Modi from his hospital bed, Machchhar said his 17 years of experience in aviation, including 11 years as a captain, helped him recognise the seriousness of the situation and respond immediately.
The Gujarat-born pilot also told the Prime Minister that although he was away from India, he remained connected to the country’s culture.
Modi praised his courage and presence of mind, saying the incident reflected a willingness to risk one’s own safety to protect others. He also thanked the governments of the UAE and Saudi Arabia for facilitating the pilot’s treatment.
With Gandhi Jayanti being observed on Friday, Modi referred to Mahatma Gandhi’s principle of Ahimsa and said the pilot’s actions demonstrated its meaning.
Machchhar thanked the Prime Minister for calling him and said he was receiving the best possible medical care. Modi also briefly spoke to him in Gujarati.
