India warns against two unauthorised Pakistan-made creams
India’s drug regulator has issued a public warning about two cosmetics labelled as being made in Pakistan after tests found excessive levels of heavy metals.
The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) identified the products as Goree Beauty Cream and Chandni Whitening Cream. The regulator said the products were unauthorised and had not received the required registration for import and sale in India.
According to the Drugs Controller General of India, testing found heavy metals above specified limits, potentially creating health risks for consumers.
The public notice said the products were not issued registration certificates by the competent authority. India’s cosmetics sector is regulated under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and the Cosmetics Rules, 2020.
The regulator advised consumers not to purchase or use the two products, as well as similarly named products that may be unauthorised.
Consumers have also been advised to check cosmetic labels for information such as the manufacturing licence number, manufacturer details, batch number, manufacturing and expiry dates, and the appropriate registration number for imported products.
The authorities urged sellers and distributors not to market the products and asked regulatory enforcement teams to prevent their sale.
Consumers who notice possible violations can report domestically manufactured products to the relevant State Drugs Controller, while concerns involving imported cosmetics can be reported to the DCGI.
