Annamalai’s movement to contest in local polls, calls for grassroots leaders to transform governance across TN
Former Tamil Nadu BJP president and We The Leaders founder K. Annamalai has called for the development of dedicated grassroots leaders who can address everyday civic problems and promote sustainable development beyond election campaigns.
Speaking to supporters, Annamalai criticised conventional political practices that, in his view, often place electoral calculations and party changes ahead of long-term community development. He argued that local leadership should be built across all 234 Assembly constituencies, 12,525 panchayats and numerous other local representative positions.
Annamalai said political leaders frequently reach out to residents during elections but are not always available to resolve their concerns afterwards. He advocated training volunteers who would serve communities without expecting personal rewards or political recognition.
He identified practical initiatives such as cleaning lakes and ponds, restoring water bodies, maintaining places of worship and planting trees as areas where committed local leaders could make a meaningful difference.
Earlier, Annamalai joined volunteers in planting 15,000 saplings across 11 acres at Thalaiyamangalam in Tiruvarur district. The programme was organised as part of the statewide environmental initiative Thiruvanam.
He described tree planting as an investment in future generations, emphasising the need to preserve soil fertility, expand green cover and protect natural resources.
According to Annamalai, the foundation behind the initiative has conducted more than 2,700 environmental programmes across Tamil Nadu in recent months and planted over 13 lakh saplings.
He called for continued public participation in environmental protection, saying community-driven efforts could help create a greener and more prosperous Tamil Nadu.
