The police on Wednesday arrested a 22-year-old man on the charge of raping a two-and-half-year-old child on Monday. The accused,
Vijay, the child’s neighbour, was arrested by the Ice House police when he was moving around in Zam Bazaar market along with a few others. On seeing the police Vijay tried to escape but was soon nabbed, officers said.
The shocking incident occurred on Monday evening, when the child was with her mother at her residence. “The woman left the child alone for a while and went for an errand, and found her missing when she returned”, said sources.
Soon, she heard her daughter’s cries from a nearby house. When she went to check, she found the child gagged, along with another person named Vijay in the room. “Vijay gave evasive replies when questioned as to why her daughter was crying, and managed to slip out by the time crowd gathered”, added sources.
The child then told her mother about what ‘the uncle’ had done. “I was suspicious about him from the day he came to visit his grandmother,” the woman.
“He had sprinkled face powder on the bed where there was blood stains,” said the child’s father, a daily wager.
The family took the child to government Royapettah Hospital where doctors referred her to government Kasturba Gandhi Hospital for Women and Children.
