A woman who murdered her two children on Saturday to elope with her lover in Kundrathur was arrested by police in Nagercoil on Sunday.
A special team of the city police nabbed the 25-year-old Abirami who allegedly killed her two children, aged 4 and 7, by poisoning them at Moondramkattalai, near Kundrathur.
Both the woman and her lover — a biriyani shop worker — were sent into judicial custody after being presented before the Saidapet Magistrate court.
According to her confession, Abirami (25) had given both the children – Ajay (6), Karunika (4) – and husband Vijayakumar (30), milk spiked with sleeping pills on Thursday night after celebrating Vijay’s birthday.
It is believed that the young girl died on the same night, as Abirami did not allow Vijay to meet the child on Friday morning, when he wanted to kiss her before leaving for office.
The plan was to poison Vijay and the two children. Since Vijay did not return home at the usual time, he escaped. Investigation revealed that Abirami had an extramarital affair with Sundaram, whom she met at a restaurant.
She saw the kids and her husband as a hindrance to her marriage with Sundaram, police said. After committing the crime, Abirami left for Nagercoil, from where she and Sundaram planned to go to Kerala. But Sundaram was arrested by the police in Chennai.
Vijay told the police that after he pulled her up over the affair, Abirami had left the family to move in with Sundaram and he brought her back after much pleading. Things seemed to be settling down in the family but it appeared that the lovers had other plans.
