A young woman, working in the IT major Infosys, was brutally hacked to death at Nungambakkam railway station in Chennai today. The incident took place around 6.30 am when she was waiting to board train for work.
When the victim, identified as Swathi (aged about 25), was waiting to board a train at the station, a youth approached her and started attacking with knife before she and other commuters could realise what was happening.
Just minutes before the murder, she was dropped at the station by her father, a retired central government employee. She was waiting to board the suburban train for work in Mahindra Tech City.
Shopkeepers in the platform said that they and other passengers at the station were taken by shock and had little time to intervene before the assailant vanished from the spot.
Sniffer dogs were pressed into service to trace the movement of the assailant. Police are suspecting someone known to Swathi has murdered her and are conducting investigations with her family members and friends.
Police sources said there was no CCTV installed in the Nungambakkam railway station. The victim’s body was lying on the platform for nearly 2 hours before police made arrangements to shift it to a mortuary.
